School year to conclude June 5

April 23, 2015

A message from Dr. Barry Martin, superintendent, Monroe Public Schools.

"The last day of school for Monroe Public Schools is scheduled for Friday, June 5.  Originally this was scheduled as a half day.  Because the district has to make up about an hour-and-a-half of time due to inclement weather days and delays, the district will follow the one-hour early-release schedule rather than having a half day.  This means students will be in school for lunch that day and will be released one hour early as done on the previously held early-release days that have occurred during this past school year.  Any fog delays that might occur between now and June 5 could complicate this plan, but if that happens, the district will let families know if further adjustments in the schedule are needed."

Safety City registration nears

April 23, 2015

Registration begins Tuesday, April 28, for the always-popular Safety City, the summer safety program geared to children either currently attending kindergarten or Young 5s, or preparing to do so in the fall.

“This program is especially designed to teach children good safety habits at home, at school and in their communities,” said Monroe Public Schools’ Alice Malik who is administering the program.  “There is an added benefit, too, since it allows children of the same age to interact with each other in an informal school-like setting, as well as interact with adults in responsible roles in our community.”

Three different sessions running from June 15 through 26 are being offered this year.  They are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. daily.  All sessions will be held at the Riverside Early Learning Center (ELC), 77 N. Roessler St.

Each day a different safety topic is presented by the classroom teacher and the program Monroe police officer or by a special guest.  The topics include water, fire, electrical, poison, bicycle, pedestrian and playground safety.  Students also will learn about safety while riding pedal cars at the outdoor classroom with street signs and a working stop light.

“Parents should sign their child up as soon as possible when registration opens because these classes fill quickly,” Mrs. Malik said.

Registration is $55 per student for the two-week session and will continue until all three sessions are filled.  Early registrations are not accepted.  In-person registrations will be accepted only at the Monroe Public Schools Administration Building, 1275 N. Macomb St.  Persons mailing in their registration should put “Attn: Safety City” on the envelope.  Make checks payable to Monroe Public Schools.  Visa, Mastercard and Discover are accepted for walk-in registrations only.  No phone registrations are accepted.

Children receive a light snack each day as well as a Safety City t-shirt.  All Safety City 2015 students also can participate in the closing graduation program for parents and friends at 6 p.m., Friday, June 26, at Riverside ELC.

MHS senior qualifies for national health competition

Monroe High School senior Amanda Lis was the only Monroe County student to qualify for the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) national competition after finishing second in her category, Nurse Assisting, at the state HOSA convention last weekend.

Lis was one of four Monroe High School students who earned top-eight finishes at the state event.  The others were Rami Dahbour in Medical Spelling, Alexa Eagle in Nurse Assisting; and Sophee Langerman in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences.

“This state conference drew 2,300 competitors so having four of our students place as high as they did is excellent and is a tribute to their knowledge in their various disciplines,” said Mrs. Leah Morelli, the Monroe High School HOSA advisor.  “Our students represented Monroe High School very well, conducting themselves with professionalism and grace in a very fierce competition.”

The national competition will be held at the end of June in Anaheim, California.

Penton to address MHS students

April 20, 2015

Former Ohio State football player, Joel Penton, who is now one of the nation’s top motivational speakers for youth, will speak to two assemblies of Monroe School students on Thursday, April 23.  Programs will be presented at noon and at 1:10 p.m.

Mr. Penton has spoken to more than one-half million people at more than 500 schools using a message of positive results from good decisions instead of negative consequences of poor choices.

As a youth speaker, he specializes in high school assemblies and middle school assemblies.

He played five years of football at Ohio State and four of those years he was an Academic All Big 10 selection.  He also played on three Big 10 championship teams and was a member of OSU’s National Championship team.  During his collegiate days, he received the Danny Wuerffel Trophy – called Humanitarian Heisman – as the one college football player in the country who best combined outstanding community service with athletic and academic achievement.

MHS chosen for college advising program

April 20, 2015

Monroe High School is the only Monroe County High School chosen for a new three-year advising program aimed at helping more high school students successfully enter and complete college.

Starting in the fall with the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, as part of the AdviseMI College Advising Program, a college advisor will be in place full-time at Monroe High School to help students apply and get accepted at colleges and universities.

“This is great for our kids and will really help us as we continue strengthening our college-going culture at Monroe High School,” said MHS Principal Valerie Orr, who had successfully applied for the three-year grant earlier in this school year.  “We will assign this person to work exclusively with the Class of 2016 throughout their senior year.  I am so happy for the added opportunities this provides Monroe High School students.”

The one-to-one college advising now will help Monroe High School students as they navigate the complex process of college admission and financial aid.  This college advisor will work closely with four existing post-secondary planners at MHS who already work with the Class of 2016.

“This is a real advantage for our students because a number of them will be first-generation college in their families and just do not have the experience in considering colleges, applying for admission and receiving financial aid to attend,” Mrs. Orr said.

“The AdviseMI program’s goal is to increase the number of high school students who enter and complete post-secondary education and that fits perfectly with what we are doing here at Monroe High School,” Mrs. Orr added.

The program operates under the auspices of the Michigan College Access Network which works with state and local educational leaders to increase college readiness, enrollment and completion rates.

All of the advisors associated with the program are recent graduates from Michigan colleges and universities who have undergone intensive five-week training,  They are to serve as experts, mentors, champions and guides to the high school students they serve, and help foster a college-gong culture in the high schools to which they are assigned.

The state colleges and universities which are participating in the program are Alma College, Central Michigan University, Easter Michigan University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Madonna University, Michigan State University, Michigan Tech University, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Michigan, U-M Dearborn, U-M Flint, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University.
