Safety City registration nears
April 23, 2015

Registration begins Tuesday, April 28, for the always-popular Safety City, the summer safety program geared to children either currently attending kindergarten or Young 5s, or preparing to do so in the fall.

“This program is especially designed to teach children good safety habits at home, at school and in their communities,” said Monroe Public Schools’ Alice Malik who is administering the program.  “There is an added benefit, too, since it allows children of the same age to interact with each other in an informal school-like setting, as well as interact with adults in responsible roles in our community.”

Three different sessions running from June 15 through 26 are being offered this year.  They are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. daily.  All sessions will be held at the Riverside Early Learning Center (ELC), 77 N. Roessler St.

Each day a different safety topic is presented by the classroom teacher and the program Monroe police officer or by a special guest.  The topics include water, fire, electrical, poison, bicycle, pedestrian and playground safety.  Students also will learn about safety while riding pedal cars at the outdoor classroom with street signs and a working stop light.

“Parents should sign their child up as soon as possible when registration opens because these classes fill quickly,” Mrs. Malik said.

Registration is $55 per student for the two-week session and will continue until all three sessions are filled.  Early registrations are not accepted.  In-person registrations will be accepted only at the Monroe Public Schools Administration Building, 1275 N. Macomb St.  Persons mailing in their registration should put “Attn: Safety City” on the envelope.  Make checks payable to Monroe Public Schools.  Visa, Mastercard and Discover are accepted for walk-in registrations only.  No phone registrations are accepted.

Children receive a light snack each day as well as a Safety City t-shirt.  All Safety City 2015 students also can participate in the closing graduation program for parents and friends at 6 p.m., Friday, June 26, at Riverside ELC.

Success!
