Student Information

Determining just what a school district expects each of its graduates to know, be able to do, and be like, is no simple task. It is a major undertaking and requires considerable dialogue and study based upon input from all representative groups within the school system, from community organizations, including business, industry and labor, as well as information from research, best practices, and best thinking.

The Student Profile which follows is what the Frameworks Phase I Committee determined to be essential for our graduates’ success into the next century. The “profile” and its supporting Substantive Guidelines is a very significant document in the history of the school district. For the very first time, there is an available description of what a graduate will know, be able to do, and be like.

This Student Profile will drive all curriculum and program development. All courses and lessons will be aligned to facilitate individual achievement of the essential learning goals as described in the profile.

Graduates of the Monroe Public Schools will demonstrate they are:

  • Community Contributors who have an understanding of their social responsibilities and direct time, energy, and talent to improving health and the quality of life for themselves and others in their diverse, global communities. They recognize and value people’s ethnic and cultural heritage, demonstrate environmental responsibility, and vote knowledgeably.
  • Complex Thinkers who consistently solve problems in both conventional and creative ways. They demonstrate ability to locate, evaluate, organize, examine, and integrate information, generating several possible solutions to a problem before making a decision.
  • Lifelong Learners who understand learning is never complete. They know it is necessary to pursue, organize, and evaluate thoughts and ideas, and apply them to changing circumstances.
  • Conflict Managers who communicate respect for self and others in resolving differences through the use of integrity, honesty, and fairness.
  • Collaborators who use interpersonal skills to reach a group goal and demonstrate cooperation by being a contributing team member and sharing ownership in the outcome.
  • Effective Communicators who understand and use written language, and who have the ability to observe, listen, and speak. They can identify and interpret a variety of symbol systems including language, non-verbal, mathematical, scientific, and computer.
  • Technologically Literate and use tools and techniques essential for inquiry and adaptation to a changing world demanding new investigation methods. They demonstrate this by selecting the proper technology, applying the technology to the task, and maintaining the knowledge and skill necessary to keep the technology working.
  • Academically Competent and acquire basic skills needed to solve problems. They retain and apply knowledge gained through using these skills to build a broader and more complex foundation of learning.
  • Aesthetically Aware and appreciate visual arts, literature, music, and recognize need for their personal contributions to the enrichment of both the individual and the community.
