District Profile

The Monroe Public Schools District, largest in Monroe County, occupies 85 square miles and includes the City of Monroe and all or part of five surrounding townships.  Its official enrollment of about 6,100 students attend seven elementary sites, one middle school and two high schools.  About 65 percent of the students are transported on 80 buses.

Elementary schools educate all students in grade K-6 in seven different buildings.  Pre-school is located at the former Riverside Elementary School.  Elementary school students are assigned to their schools based on geographic attendance areas within the district boundaries.  Schools of Choice options within the Monroe District are available to elementary families based on available space at each school.  Information about this and other Schools of Choice options available to our students is available at the MPS Administration Building, 1275 N. Monroe Middle School houses all 7-8 grade level students.  Monroe High School and Orchard Center High School houses students in grades 9-12.  The district also operates Monroe Virtual High School.

Monroe Public Schools has developed and maintains a “state-of-the-art” core curriculum that is supplemented by a host of excellent elective programs throughout the grade levels.  The comprehensive general education, special education, pre-school and child care programs are supplemented with a community education program that serves thousands of residents each year.  The district maintains numerous student assistance programs, a wide range of athletics for boys and girls, adult and senior citizen high school completion programs, after-school enrichment, and intramural activities, and summer schools for high school, middle school and elementary students.  We are considered a “full-service” community school district.  The district participates in the Monroe County Schools of Choice program in cooperation with all school districts in the county.  

The majority (56%) of revenue for operation is provided by state funding.  Additionally, 40% is generated by other local sources of revenue and 4% from federal sources.  General operating taxes are 6 mills from homestead and 24 mills from non-homestead properties.   The Building & Site Sinking Fund is 1 mill on all property.  The technology millage is .9866 mills on all county property with Monroe’s share distributed by the Intermediate School District on a per-pupil basis.

A general powers school district as of July 1, 1996, Monroe Public Schools is governed by a seven-member school board.  Current Board of Education members are Heather Boone, Matthew Bunkelman, Cathleen Netter, Robert Nichols, Rosalie Pasko, Lawrence VanWasshenova, and Larry Zimmerman. Julie Everly was appointed Superintendent of Schools January 1, 2017.

The professional staff of the district includes 23 administrators and 314 teaching and other professional support personnel.  More than 71 percent of the professional staff have advanced degrees.  Other district staff, which includes secretaries, assistants, custodial/maintenance, bus drivers, substitutes and contracted employees, brings the district total to nearly 1,000 employees.
