Dear Monroe Public Schools Family,
Monroe Public Schools works to educate and inform our community to ensure everyone’s health and well-being. By working together, we can protect our children and each other when situations arise that may impact our safety.
As you may already be aware, there have been more confirmed cases of Hepatitis A reported in Monroe County since the initial exposure in November. Today, we learned that a Monroe Public Schools student has been reported to have a diagnosis of Hepatitis A. It was reported to us that the high school student was officially diagnosed during our recent holiday break. The student is being treated and is expected to make a full recovery.
Monroe Public Schools is working closely with the Monroe County Health Department to take every precaution to keep our students, staff, and community healthy and safe. The MCHD has recommended that students and staff continue to wash their hands thoroughly and often. According to the MCHD, Hepatitis A is unlikely to be spread by simply sitting in class or having casual contact with an infected person. Nevertheless, we want to take every precaution to ensure that you are aware and informed.
The Hepatitis A vaccination has been recommended for all children at 12 months by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 2006, but has been available since 1999. Please check your child’s immunization records to verify if he or she has received the vaccination. Most adults, however, may not be vaccinated. The MCHD and Monroe Public Schools are recommending that everyone in the community consults a healthcare provider and considers receiving the Hepatitis A vaccine.
Symptoms of Hepatitis A can include fatigue, poor appetite, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, yellowing of the skin and eyes, and dark urine. If you are concerned that you or your children may have been exposed, contact your medical provider or the Monroe County Health Department by calling (734) 240-7800. The MCHD’s clinic hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on Hepatitis A and vaccination information, click here.
Together, we look out for each other’s safety and well-being. Rest assured that we are and will continue to maintain our cleaning and disinfecting routines and provide extra consideration to any area that has been occupied by an individual with any sort of contagious condition. Our community is stronger and more resilient when we are well-informed and have the knowledge we need to address issues, embrace questions, and make Monroe the best it can be every day. Please contact us if you have any questions or are in need of additional information.
Together, we are stronger. Together, we are Monroe!
As always,
Julie M. Everly,
Superintendent

Dear Monroe Public Schools Family,
In Monroe Public Schools, everything we do, from curriculum and technology advancements to updates in maintenance and infrastructure, is aimed at supporting our students to achieve their fullest potential. For this reason, we informed you of our proactive and voluntary water testing earlier this year. We will always keep health and safety as our highest priority.
Following this spring announcement, the Monroe Public Schools Department of Operations proactively commissioned 213 total tests of consumable water sources in 13 buildings district-wide to ensure that all of our students and staff were only in contact with water that is healthy and safe. Consumable water sources include drinking fountain and faucets. Water sampling and analysis was performed in partnership with the City of Monroe Water Department and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The guidance that we received through this partnership was invaluable.
The MDEQ’s water quality standards require that action be taken for any water outlet with levels of lead at or above 15 parts per billion (ppb) and levels of copper at or above 1,300 ppb. Out of the 213 water sources tested, four required corrective action. This was executed immediately, and upon retesting, all 213 sources are now in compliance with MDEQ standards.
As with all of the services our district provides to the community, we pride ourselves in being forward-thinking, energetic, and transparent in our pursuit toward excellence. Thank you for your ongoing support. Monroe Public Schools is stronger because you are a part of it. Feel free to contact me through email at everly@monroe.k12.mi.us or by phone at 734-265-3000. Together, we will embrace questions, address issues, and engage in conversations to make Monroe the best it can be every single day.
Believe. Engage. Excel.

Before the advent of World War II, schools from all over the United States sent dolls to children in Japan in the hopes of fostering a meaningful and lasting friendship for future generations. Hollywood Elementary, now Arborwood Elementary Campus’ North building, sent one of these dolls to a school in Hofu, Japan, sparking a relationship that has spanned four more dolls and decades of comradery.
That relationship continued Monday as Arborwood principal Steve Pollzzie welcomed five exchange students from Hofu and their guides, independent certified coach Timothy Brakel and Kim Steve or the Monroe International Friendship Association, to the campus. Brakel gave the students the background of the doll exchange and the students saw two dolls that were gifted to Arborwood by the city of Hofu, as well as a look into an American elementary school.
Pollzzie gifted the students with Arborwood t-shirts and gave them a glimpse of a classroom and how school works in the United States. The thankful and intrigued students then posed for a picture with Pollzzie outside the school. They will stay in the United States for the next three weeks, immersing themselves in American culture here in Monroe.
Due to the parking lot project construction at the Administration Building, the Monroe Public Schools Board of Education Work Session and Board Meeting #13 will be held at the Monroe County Courthouse in the County Commissioners Room, 120 E. Second Street, Monroe, MI 48161. The Work Session will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Board Meeting at 7:00 p.m.
We are eagerly approaching the beginning of a wonderful new school year! This year, before school even starts, Monroe Public Schools will be offering special opportunities to our Young Five and Kindergarten students at each of our elementary schools – “Young Five and Kindergarten Jump Start” and “Young Five and Kindergarten Individual Assessment Sessions”. This opportunity will allow your child to meet our staff, explore their classroom and school, and experience many of our school routines prior to our other friends joining the school community.
The 2017/2018 Young Five and Kindergarten Jump Start will take place August 21 - 24, from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. During these four sessions our staff will welcome your child with a variety of activities that will allow everyone to launch new friendships and form our community of learners. Teachers will utilize this time to make connections with your child and get to know him/her as an individual – academically and socially. Families will have the choice to provide their own transportation, or if within our busing zone, utilize our Monroe Public Schools bus transportation for children to get to and from the Jump Start sessions.
To reserve your child's place in Jump Start, click here to apply. All registrations must be received by Monday, July 31. You will receive a follow-up notification with additional details and bus information from your child's school.
In addition to the four Jump Start sessions, families will schedule a Young Five and Kindergarten Individual Assessment Session for your child to come to school for some learning assessments. These assessments will provide important information for the teacher to prepare for your child’s individual plan of instruction for the upcoming school year. Assessment sessions will take place at each elementary school at various times between August 21st and August 31st. We will do everything that we can to work with your family’s schedule.
To schedule your child’s appointment, please call the school office (school phone numbers below) on August 14th and 15th between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Families will provide transportation to and from their child’s assessment appointment.
