Advanced Placement Curriculum Helps Students Earn College Credit

When parents and students are making that critical decision on where to attend high school, the first word that comes to mind is OPPORTUNITY!

Monroe High School offers the most Advanced Placement courses in the countyThe list of AP courses can be found at the end of this article.

“Parents and students want to know whether or not a high school will offer a variety of challenging opportunities,” says Monroe High School Guidance Counselor Lisa Warnke.  “We offer more instructional options at Monroe High School that anyone in Monroe County.”

Parents also are concerned about the rising cost of post-secondary education, whether it’s a vocational school, community college or 4-year university. That’s why Monroe High School’s Advanced Placement (AP) program continues to grow in popularity year after year.  We had record numbers sign up this fall.  The AP curriculum provides challenging opportunities for students to earn college credit while in high school.  After fulfilling academic prerequisites in a specific area of learning, students may take an AP course that will prepare them to take a nationally-standardized AP test – with the goal of earning college credit based on successful test results. “The great thing about the AP curriculum is that testing is accepted nationally by hundreds of colleges and universities,” Warnke explained, “Whether you live in Michigan or Texas or California, it’s always the same test.”

AP classes are just one example of a vast amount of resources, opportunities – and rigorous instructional options – offered by Monroe Public Schools.  The other opportunities offered that offer college credit are the Dual Enrollment and Direct College programs.  Dual enrollment is the opportunity to take college-credit courses on the Monroe County Community College (MCCC) campus while still taking classes at Monroe High School.   Direct college is the opportunity to take MCCC courses on the MHS campus.  Students also select to study courses “online” thanks to a partnership between Monroe and Michigan Virtual.

For the 2022-2023 school year, Monroe High School offers AP classes in eight different instructional areas:

Current course offerings are as follows:

1.     AP English Literature and Composition
