The largest support service in the district is Transportation. Monroe Public Schools transports approximately 4,000 public and non-public students every morning and afternoon, including more than 250 special needs students. School buses service eight public schools and five non-public schools each day. The district will provide transportation for all students living more than one mile from the school they are assigned to. The Transportation Department advises parent to estimate the distance from the pickup location and have the students at their assigned bus stop five minutes before the bus arrives at the stop.
Students will be bused to and from their home address of record and will generally ride the same bus to school and from school.
To be successful, at least 42 school buses are needed. These buses travel over 700,000 miles annually including field trips. Each year the bus fleet is inspected by the Michigan State Police to ensure a high standard of safety for our students and the bus drivers. We are very proud to consistently receive a high rating due to our extensive maintenance program. The 2018/19 inspection resulted in a 100% rating from the Michigan State Police. We are also proud to report that our reputation for safety is one of the best in the region.
Our objective is to make sure our buses are at the bus stops on time and that the students are safe when they ride the bus. Bus drivers need to focus their full attention on the road to safely drive the bus. Communication between students, parents and bus drivers is a very important factor to maintain good order. This helps to ensure all students are picked up and returned home safely each day.
Our discipline mandates are available in the student’s handbook as well as on our website under transportation. Please remind your student that the bus is just like being in the classroom. They may not stand while the bus is in motion. Students should remain seated with their back against the seat and legs facing forward. No eating is allowed on the bus. Indoor voices should be used and no shouting is allowed. Foul language or bullying will not be tolerated. The bus driver is authorized to assign seats. Discipline will be issued per the Transportation Code of Conduct for safety rule violation. This may result in a bus misconduct notice being written and/or a bus suspension, depending on severity of violation and where the student is in the discipline process.
Parent and guardians may go to our district website www.monroe.k12.mi.us, look under Quick Links, and then click on Bus Routes to access bus assignments. Simply follow the prompts after you enter your street address. The search also can be narrowed by grade or by school. Using this program will allow you to see the results of your search, including a map that shows your street address and bus stop location in your area as well as additional bus stop times that serve your address.
Parents/Guardians with transportation questions may contact the Transportation office at 734-265-3300 between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Have a great school year!
